Verdict : Why are these guys not on the dropdown list? In terms of price/performance I think they must have most other hosting providers beat. I built the California Trade Network using Alterhosting, and have been VERY happy with their services. They are fantastic at supporting open source applications, with a nice collection of them pre-installed. Support is mostly by email, but they seem to go the extra mile to help. Once, when I couldn't publish using both Frontpage and WordPress, and no one anywhere knew how to fix this, they did some extra research and got it to work. The control panel is through Plesk which seems to work well and has most of the features I need for PHP/mySql projects. They have had a few brief outages, but they seem to be less frequent lately and I am happy to recommend these guys.
