I was with Apollo Hosting for over 7 years! They just recently migrated over to another company and have lost my entire site!!! No back up, nothing! I know they were migrating and I received the e-mails and where there was a problem I responded and took care of it. My shopping cart was having a problem and the files were fixed. A test purchase was made and I have proof it went through successfully. Now, I come to find my site is lost and the files are under lock down on the previous server!I am seeking legal help! If anyone is interested in joining me please let me know!I am at (415) 370-6700.
My decision to use Apollo hosting was the single worst decision I have made in my professional career. When I first started with them about 7 years ago, the support was decent and I had few problems. Over the past 5 years, I have had one problem after the next – all due to poor customer service or problems with their servers. I kept telling myself each time we had an issue – whether it being our online shopping cart mysteriously stopping to work or our website going offline inexplicably – that what else could possibly go wrong. I told myself that my website is up, everything is configured correctly, the forms all work, the shopping cart (miva merchant) works, what else could go wrong, I thought. I was wrong again and again. Finally, I had enough and left, but not until their incompetence cost my business approximately $15,000 in lost sales revenue. They just got bought out by another company and just when I thought that things couldn’t get worse, once again, they proved me wrong.
(this is the same review that I submitted October 4th. Some how my OVERALL rating was improperly loaded as a 5 out of 5. My OVERALL rating of this company is 2 out of 5) Please update the review.
"This company went from OK to poor over the 3+ years we have been with Apollo. Frequent outages seemingly in sets (every 2-3 months or so). Poor tech access and tech knowledge. I lost a lot of time + $ over the years with down email etc. It is time to move on..."
One of the tech reps told me that Apollo's version of PHP was 5.2.5 for the Linux Shared Hosting Plan. He also confirmed to me that specific PHP extensions were enabled. So I purchased the Linux Value Plan that day. After my domain name was moved to the Linux server from their Windows server three days later, after I had to tell them three times that my domain name was still pointing to the old Windows server, I found out that the Linux Plan was not using PHP 5, but a version 4. So not only had the tech rep given me false info, but their website displays false information. Their Linux Shared Hosting Plans are not using version 5.2.5, but an older version 4.4.7 instead. Another tech rep didn't even know what versions of PHP they were using.
Apollo has gone from being competent to terrible. I can deal with occasional problems but when you can't get hold of the tech support that they promise as 24/7 and responses take a week or more, I can't deal with that. The VP of operations was just fired so maybe ownership has finally realized they are going down the tubes.
This company went from OK to poor over the 3+ years we have been with Apollo. Frequent outages seemingly in sets (every 2-3 months or so). Poor tech access and tech knowledge. I lost a lot of time + $ over the years with down email etc. It is time to move on...
They've gone from best to worst, period. They blame the customer when the server is down. They blame the customer when the server is slow. They blame the customer when they install updates on the server and it produces errors.
This, of course, after waiting sometimes weeks for a response. The technical support chat is a joke. The people on the other end have extremely limited knowledge and capabilities, so they're useless. Phone support? HA! The never answer it! You're put on perma-hold until you give up.
This is the WORST host provider you could consider!! Don't do it!
I've been with this hosting company ever since I started doing web design because I didn't know any better and I've been too lazy to look elsewhere ever since. However, the problems I've been having with them are driving me to look for a more efficient hosting company. Most of my problems are with email. They use a free webmail program for their customers. It's extremely unreliable. Sometimes you login and your email is there and sometimes it's not. This is unacceptable. I have email users asking me to please restore their email. When I contact tech support they are slow about it. My own email account has never been restored and I've resorted to using Gmail.
The latest thing that's happening is that we can't send outgoing emails. The SMTP server is down. I contacted tech support and they told me that this happens when email traffic is high. When I asked him what he was going to do about it, he wanted me to move to their new tier of service. Hmmm...a sales guy called me last week trying to get me to do this very same thing. Now it seems like they're trying to force me into it. I don't believe in coincidences.
Also, their prices are very high, not competitive at all. The only good thing about them is I haven't experienced any website downtime, just the email problems. They expect you to use Outlook or a similar program whereas my email users prefer to simply use webmail and they don't support that.
They go down or slow down concistently and then tell you nothing is wrong. I have several customers whom we are moving away ASAP as their email goes down for several hours per week. You call Apollo and they say nothing is wrong yet "miraculously" it starts working again. They keep you on hold forever waiting in queue and really have no care for the customers.
- tech support swears that I crashed Apache for the third time in two months by uploading a .jpg to the server.
- proceeds to insist that after any website update I am to review the logs and check the system status of Apache and restart if needed.
- you must sign over your first born to get SSH access.
- anytime there has been an issue with the sever and database not speaking to each other (quite often) it's not really happening... even when given screen shots of the error messages. In fact... most horrible server issues are a figment of the clients imagination.
issues with apollo
1. They changed the system name on my VPS without permission or explanation.
2. They suggested that the entire confederate of Switzerland must be blocking my IP since clients could not access the site from two independent ISPs in Switzerland. Supposedly from their end everything works. Special quote - "Sometimes it may not work overseas"
3. One of my sites has been down for ages because tech support accidentally disabled the static IP during an upgrade.
4. When I purchase online from the instant upgrade center, I wait days for the service to be realized.
5. Constant performance issues with MIVA. MIVA is a bear on resources but 2 minutes for a page to appear!!
6. Tech support telling me that billing must have changed the technical name of my VPS.
7. Disabling SSH access, you have to ask for their permission to use SSH or tell them the exact IP you be accessing SSH
8. Cancelation of my account because ApolloHosting billing had a hangover during Jan 1 billing.
I guess I should have known better to select them as my host. looking for a new one desperately.
