Verdict : Cedant are a decent and reliable host but fail miserably at tech support. On this basis alone they should be avoided. A lot of web hosts are quite good until you have a problem. I had several Unix accounts and one Windows account. I needed an image component set up on the Windows account. They were unable to do it. The reason was that the tech support people are just middle-men to the server administrators and the process involved in getting anything done is to go through tech support. Admin would have questions about an issue and go back to tech support who would go back to me, etc. It took a great deal of time and did not work. I lost a big contract because the web site was not working and despite my pleas I could not talk directly to a server admin to solve the problem which was just a simple configuration issue. Good hosts are hard to find - Cedant is not one of them.

Verdict : My website was hosted by Cedant since 2002, and up to now I only had minor grievances.

First the good: The service seems to be very reliable, I have never had any speed or downtime issues with them.

The bad: Their support phone number is usally answered by a badly recorded voice message (think computer voice). In most cases, whether it concerned support or billing issues, I was not connected to a live person and instead had to leave a callback number on a tape! Pretty frustrating when you have a real issue that needs to be dealt with asap. They would eventually call me back but that could easily take hours.

The worst: I had a problem with a fraudulent charge to my credit card which happened to be in the same amount as my monthly credit card charge from Cedant. The credit card company (MBNA at the time) mistakenly labeled Cedant's charge as fraudulent instead, so Cedant couldn't charge to my card as they had done the previous 4 years.

I was proactive about it, called them and gave them my new credit card number, told them I was working with the credit card company to straighten it out and asked them to please contact me in case of any further trouble. In the meantime and after several phone calls on my part to my cc company, the credit card company had apologized to me and rebilled Cedant's charge to my credit card, so I thought everything was ok.

Imagine my surprise when I received an email from Cedant stating that because this one charge at first didn't go through (the one the cc company had mistakenly marked as fraudulent but later corrected), they would not accept any further cc payments from me and I had to pay by check from now on. In the process of trying to clear this up, I even got the cc company (Bank of America's Fraud Department, no less!) to call them and explain that it was the bank's mistake and that I had done nothing wrong. But Cedant wouldn't budge and insisted they'd either receive a letter from the cc company on official letter head or... see above. I then called Cedant myself again and got "Olga" on the phone who wouldn't even connect me to a supervisor. She only wanted to give me an email address I could write to.

Needless to say, my almost 5 years with Cedant have definitely come to an end. The technical side of things is working well, no complaints there, but their customer service and the way they treat long-term, reliable customers like me is just completely out of line. As of now I am looking for a company with better customer service. Much better customer service actually!

Verdict : I've been with Cedant for about 2 months and have nothing but good things to say. I run an amateur site containing large amounts of enthusiast car video footage so my prime interest was in finding a reliable and economical vendor who offered unlimited bandwidth without the usual stipulations (many vendors that offer unmetered bandwidth will pull your site if it contains mainly video). I am generating between 100-200 GB traffic per month. I pay about $26 a month. My experience with cheaper hosts (see my awful review of Canaca) was terrible.
Cedant made transferring my account very easy and everything has worked perfectly. Their admin tools are nice and easy to use. They responded to all of my early queries in a very timely fashion. I'll submit another review at the one year mark.

Verdict : Except for a burp during a server partner change over, they have been reliable. They should make their control panels work again soon, too.
