Started with these folks (MyDomain.com aka dotster) a few years ago to just forward 2 domain names to free hosting at email and web space from my ISP, with a long term plan to move email/hosting there eventually.
Things went smoothly for a little while then one day email quit working on both sites. My ISP had blacklisted the MyDomain/dotster nameservers and shut off all email (without notifying the intended recipients!) saying they (ISP) were receiving too much spam from MyDomain/dotster. Lotsa finger pointing - don't know who was right/wrong and didn't care - but I needed email back ASAP so took the path of least resistance and signed up for free email hosting on the domains. All up and going in a day - great.
Things went OK for a while until we started getting a lot of email and needed more space so I signed up for a paid email package on one domain and routed email from the other domain to extra mailboxes on the first. Worked great, cheap.
Then I noticed that email being forwarded from one domain to the other would sometimes go off into never-never land and take a week to show up at the mailbox. Tech support said something like "what do you expect from free email forwarding". So I got in a little deeper and bought a separate email hosting package for the second domain. Took a week or so for them to get this going - some internal problem turning on the paid hosting and turning off the free.
Since then there have been several extended email outages (approx 1 day or longer) where email was either lost or delayed until the problem fixed as well as two site outages where domain forwarding didn't work resulting in "page not found". All these were due to some internal error. In the latest problem (no email) after no response a day after filing a trouble report I called, waited on hold for 15 minutes or so and the line went dead. I was finally able to reach some very useful help on chat to fix the problem but no response to "how do we prevent this from happening again".
In their defense, service has been fairly good except for these outages although webmail access has gotten very slow if there are many messages. I certainly don't plan on moving the sites over with the email troubles I've had and am looking elsewhere for the whole package. |

No, they are not underrated and if they didn't get positive recognition, it's because they didn't deserve it. Their customer service is crappy. One time I tried to buy a plan buy phone and the guy I was speaking with tried to trick me by saying a plan that I wanted didn't exist. Then he hit me with this really expensive plan. As soon as I told the person, "No thank you, I will look for other options," all of a sudden he was like, "Oh, you meant that you wanted the plan for **** a month?" That was really rude of him to try to take advantage.
*Oh, let me act as though the plan that she wants doesn't exist, so that I can get more money out of her...Oh, well, I'm about to lose this client, so let me go ahead and give her the plan she wanted at first...little money is better than no money.
Customer service by email is super poor as well, taking them days to respond. They would also tell me that they would call back, but never would.
I would not trust them with my money. You have been warned. |

I think Dotster is the most underrated host on the net. Their packages are affordable, their customer service is great, and my site has never run faster. |
