Having had a dedicated server for a few years and realising that the market had changed and I was no longer getting a good deal pricewise, I decided to try FDC.
They sold me a dedicated server:
* CPU - AMD Duron 1400
* Memory - 1GB RAM
* Hard Disk Space - 80GB HDD
* 100Mbit port - full duplex
* 100Mbit unmetered bandwidth
Thanks to a special offer, I got the hard drive upgraded to 400Gb and all looked great. OK, it wasn't a managed server like I was used to, but I'm a quick learner and I soon got everything up and running with the help of WHM/Cpanel.
Whilst setting up the server I noticed I only had 512Mb RAM. Sent in an email to tech support, got a reply saying 'You have 1Gb now'. Wow, I thought, that's a neat trick without taking a DS offline to fit RAM.
Probably should have realised then that I was on a VPS and not the DS I had paid for.
Next problem came when I discovered that all emails being generated by my server (via sendmail etc) were bouncing off recipients. That's when I discovered that the primary IP I had been allocated was on every spam list in existence. Asked for a new IP address, was told they would send emails to try and get me off the block lists. They wouldn't do any more. Note that the date of blocking was over a month before I got the IP address.
Noticed that processes kept falling over, requiring me to restart FTP, MySQL, Horde, etc every couple of days, and Apache about once every four days. Put it down to my being a novice at managing servers (although I hadn't changed anything from the original specs. I now suspect it was being on a VPS, or rather the strain of other people on the server, that was the problem).
Not dissuaded, I got my sites up and running on my shiny new (secretly VPS) DS. Put expensive Adwords campaigns in train, and then experienced on and off downtime over the space of a week. The whole data center appeared to be down for up to an hour at a time. Never once received any prior warning or retrospective apology/explanation from FDC.
The final straw was when the server stopped responding today but FDC's own site was up. Put in a support ticket asking for a reboot and was told I was offline due to non-payment of an invoice.
Given I have been on FDC for three weeks and paid for a month in advance, there are no invoices on my account, the next invoice isn't even due for another ten days, this seemed unlikely. When I pointed this out to them, FDC just said 'Oh, its up again now that you have paid'. That was the final straw and I won't be renewing my server.
I have been working on the internet for some 12 years. I have worked for major hosting companies and I have hosted with many more. I have had dedicated servers from four different companies over the years, and NEVER have I come across such total and utter incompetence.
I would highly recommend anyone looking for any kind of DS or VPS avoids FDC like the plague. You really don't need the grief.
