I went with MediaTemple, first and foremost because I saw someone mention it in a PHP forum I read. So I checked out their site and it seemed like a great company. All over the website, it read how their customer support is top notch. So I left WestHost and went with them.
What I learned after the server came online... It had a port attached to the main ip/domain, so this CP becomes useless to me while I am at work. I asked the support team for some assistance with this, and they stonewalled me, explaining that it isn't supported. I offered to pay to get it changed, and received the same answer. Keep this in mind when you sign up for the VDS packages, that they have extremely limited technical support.
After several plea's with the managers in the helpdesk there, I finally gave up and went with GoDaddy, thinking their service would be an improvement, since they "did offer" the service to fix such things (which I am more than happy to pay). When I signed up with them, it took 2 days to get my server online, and it has been a week so far since I started the transfer of my domain, and it still hasn't arrived.
I recently left MediaTemple because they would not assist me with altering the default URL of the CP to an address without a URL. I asked them to point me in the direction to get this resolved myself, as well as possibly paying them to alter the CP address for me, both responses were met with a blunt, "This is not supported" brick wall.
I have since moved my service back to WestHost, after trying GoDaddy and seeing the same results, where I should of stayed in the first place.
I would not recommend any of MediaTemple's hosting plans for novices, or even intermediate users, but it would be perfect for advanced users, who enjoy modifying every *.conf file to get the desired result. |

I too experienced extremely poor performance and connectivity from locations around the world (even the US). It too seemed to be related to their MySQL setup which according to word on the street is still somewhat experimental on grid servers...
I too experienced customer support blaming everything but themselves and boasting about their massive data connections and server farms. Between the lines they would begrudgingly admit to the MySQL issues... I'm grateful that I didnt fall for their intimidation tactics and moved hosts... Stay away. Don't fall for they slick marketing. |

I switched to Mediatemple after being with Dreamhost for alittle while. Ok, Mediatemple timesout probably two or three times a week for over half an hour, but apart from that I have no complaints. Also, the MySQL databases go down about the same amount of times. The customer service is good, and they get back to you.
If you want a fairly reliable host, then these guys are good. High performance? Not quite. |

My experience with this host has been extremely bad. Since I signed up the problems kept appearing. First, MySQL was down for a couple of hours. For all my sites. A couple of days later, I couldn't even access the control panel. Then MySQL down again. Then email servers down. Then web sites not acessible (server not available error). Then email servers down again. Then everything down. Then SSL problems. Then email issues. Then daily email issues. Then.. I guess you see where this is going.
To top it all off, access times are extremely laggy and slow. I checked this from at least 4 different places and internet providers (including corporate gigabit connectivity) but on all lines the same outcome. Support requests take 20 hours or longer. Phone support is unavailable (despite claims to be available 24/7/365). They told me my ISP has to be blamed for slow access times but I read reviews on the net that tons of people are experiencing the same issues. They also claim they have a server farm of hundreds of servers but it seems to have been uncovered that in fact they only have about 15-17. That would explain the massive performance issues many customers are having.
In fact, most customers I have spoken to already jumped ship. I will next week. Do yourself a favor and stay clear of MT. |
