I bought my domain through Portland and they hosted it for a few weeks. We're only talking 3 pages, but, even so, the downtime exceeded the up time.
I got the distinct impression that this was a one-man business since the level of support was below zero. When I notified them that my domain was unavailable they emailed me explaining that they had "a major fileserver crash" also the "mail.portland.co.uk" was down and also the FTP server was down, since "we cannot have sites
being updated while we work on the servers."
Yet 10 days later my domain was still unavailable, FTP was still unavailable, email was still unavailable, and Portland support was still unavailable.
In sheer desperation I tried to get my domain switched to another host provider, but ... guess what ... Portland had locked my domain so that it couldn't be transferred (something called TransferGuard). Plus they stopped answering any of my emails.
So the fact was that I had bought a domain that I couldn't access and couldn't transfer either. A very costly lesson.
There's no way in the world that I could even begin to recommend Portland to anyone, personal or business. If this was a local shop I would be talking to the local Trading Standards Officer - but Portland are a law until themselves lacking even the courtesy to communicate. Which is a bit odd really since their full name is ...
... Portland Communications! |

Following numerous problems (including a complete failure to allow me to renew my account for 3 weeks, and a customer site being compromised apparently taking out the whole server!), I have now moved everything away from Portland. I even had to rely on Google's cache of the site when moving it off, as the latest problem resulted in the restoration of the site as it was 12 months ago! The only way they could make the service worse would be to switch off the entire network (although that may be an improvement) |

I really like Portland Communications. I first signed up two years ago and have loved it since! The one (fairly major) thing that has made me mad is the downtime! Over the last two years My site has only been down twice. However, both tims have been for well over a week! Currently my site has been office for 9 days. Not cool portland! Still, There are NO ADS! Email forwarding, and lots of other stuff, AND ALL THIS IS JUST THE FREE PACKAGE! |

To fully understand the level of service this host provides, you need only refer to the community forum. There you will see countless posts in reference to why new customers are still waiting to receive their user details or why Portland refuses to answer any e-mails. It is left up to the members of the community forum to answer all queries and offer assistance and support. So in effect, what you are doing is paying Portland to use their hosting service and offer-up your free time to take your turn at manning their customer support desk.
I contacted Portland on numerous occasions and always in a civilised manner. To date, I have not received one response. It is now 8 months on and I have yet to receive my user details despite the fact that an acknowledgement was issued stating that the account had been created.
If it was possible to give a lower rating than 'zero' then this host, Portland, would definitely receive it.
