Verdict : I can't tell you how much I dislike this company. They've been consistently disorganized on the billing/customer service end. Over the last few months, I've wasted hours on the phone with customer service doing simple stuff that was supposed to be available through the online billing center.

I could go into a long explanation, but basically, I had two low traffic, low maintenance accounts with them for maybe three years. Their hosting service and tech support were barely OK. But whenever it came to billing, cancelling an account, adjusting credit card payments that shouldn't have been made, the whole phone support thing was a nightmare.

The worst yet was today (Nov-16-2007), as I got bounced back and forth between two phone numbers (billing and tech support), and finally told that there was nothing to do, emails I hadn't received were my problem because "thousands of other customers" were getting them fine, and HUNG UP ON.

With so many hosts out there, why take a chance with this awful company?

Verdict : It's really too bad. I've been with dotcanada.com a LONG time (before they bought that other company). Not only have they ruined that company (from what I've heard) but they've also trashed their own service.

Dotcanada used to have fairly decent review (which is why I bought them in the first place), competetive pricing, and friendly staff.

Now?

My site was down for MONTHS after they broke it. I only receieved their 'By the way, this is a reminder that we're completely changing your service' email 2 days before the change (with absolutely NO emails about the change otherwise) and with all respect to the folks in Eastern Canada, I'm sorry but I don't speak French and shouldn't be forced to do all my tech support & business in french. (The tech support fellow barely spoke English and I had an easier time with my broken college French than he had with English).

So, it's been a wild 4 years with the company, but I suspect this review is a moot point as I figure they're probably just closing up shop and this is their way of milking that last little bit of money out.

Verdict : The biggest disappointment is the move from cPanel to OS4. If I wanted to work in a Windoze environment, I'd by a PC. When they changed the control panel system to a much more limited and harder to use type, it indicated that they were no longer about the cusomer and all about the bottom line. Too bad, that attitude loses customers. I am moving my hosting and wil not recommend them to any of my clients.

Verdict : I would never recommend this host to anyone.

These people are rude unreliable and completely unprofessional. Many hours of downtime.

They do not live up to their 99% uptime guarantee. Also I received no compensation as they claim in their policies. http://dotcanada.com/index.php?page=guarantee

Instead of helping me solve my issues they suggested I terminate my service, which turned out to be the most valuabale suggestion they could offer.

In short it's all been too confusing and stressful. Not to mention the loss of money involved. If you want to run a web based business this is not the host to use.

Verdict : I became a dotcanada customer when affordablehost.com was bought by them. As soon as dotcanada had the reigns, the service was appalling - speed not really an issue, but the terse, unhelpful replies that give you the opinion that you are not a valued customer, are goint to do this company damage.

The price is cheap, but what you get is a big headache for the price of a large botttle of paracetamol a month. Nobody needs that.

Verdict : DotCanada.com is an absolutely horrible web hosting company in all these catagories except price. I had 4 sites hosted with them, all of them would go down almost weekly it seemed like (and that was when I actually checked them, it was probably down a good percentage of the time). Emails stopped working or dissapeared very regularly. Even many of their pages on their own website, including their own support site would stop working. In the 3 years that I was with them they must have "upgraded" to "better" servers at least 4 times. Each time it would be a disaster, with sites not being backed up, emails dissapearing, and passwords being changed without any warning. I lost 2 sites during previous "migrations". Before the most recent "server upgrade" I worked for weeks on my site, and stupidly did not back it up. The day after the site was complete the servers upgraded and I was left with nothing the next morning. Also no warning email that this was coming. The customer service person told me that he had no access to the old servers, and even after I explained it to him, he said I had not made any changes and that there was nothing he could do. After 2 phone calls, and 2 emails explaining in detail that my databases and site had dissapeared in their migration, and that I needed a backup, I received a standard form letter email reply with the settings for FTP?!?!?. Which I used to confirm that my site was indeed toast. I even went as far as trying to send a complaint to their parent company LightSpeed Technologies, but alas the form on their corporate site was down too. Also after asking to not have my plans auto-renew they went ahead and billled my credit card anyways! Avoid DotCanada.com at all costs.

Verdict : Do not sign up with these guys. they treat you like dirt.

My experiences were the same as Jake's (below). I've been with dotcanada for over three years, and i have four sites hosted by them. I have had nothing but good things to say about them until earlier this year, when they started shifting my sites to another server. I had beautifully working sites for three years, and suddenly i had failures all over. They never helped me figure this out and get my sites back, and they were not friendly anymore (as before).
the worst happened this month, when they transferred my sites yet again, and again i lost access, lost emails, had my clients on my back because the same happened to them, and the guy in tech support (a certain Emilio), when confronted by my complaints told me verbatim 'That's your problem, not mine' and hung up.

Again, do not waste your time and money on dotcanada.

Verdict : Do NOT subscribe to this host.
They had their ups and downs (mostly downs) but now they changed my hosting package to something they call "Enterprise package", which you cannot normally purchase. Anyway, they did not even announce me this "upgrade" was taking place, thus I had 3 days downtime. The "Enterprise package upgrade" also made me lose 2 weeks of data and the page designs are now messed up because of automated modifications in css files and amateur database restoring.
Support did not know anything and no one was the fault for anything. Nor did they solve anything.

As if this were not enough, I also don't have access to CPanel anymore, but they gave me a horrible control panel called WebhostOS.

Do not sign up with them, you have been warned!

Verdict : This is my first experience with a webhosting company. Looking at the price and reviews from a year ago, this company seemed great. Unfortunately, it ISN'T!!! Our site has been down at least 4 times and each of the times lasted over 24 hours. (Once, it lasted about 5 days). Our emails have been lost at least 3 times and they claimed that they couldn't do anything about it. They're very fast at responding to emails and saying that they're sorry and that they are working on the problem...and all they gave me was a free month of webhosting!!!
I would not recommend dotcanada. I am definitely transfering hosts when my contract expires.

Verdict : I only gave them 1 out of 5s, only because 0 wasn't an option. Their pricing, however, I must admit was good.

DotCanada caused me nothing but problems. I signed up through their Costco package, and was more down that up (I did the math, 31 days with them, 19 of which were down). I run a business website, and looked very stupid in front of my clients. I got the Better Business Bureau involved and got my money back. I also wrote a letter to Costco, which they are following up on (I was surprised, but they called me last week).

Verdict : I was with this company for approximately 5 years. Initially the service and support were excellent. This all went downhill about a year ago. I had a reseller account and lost ALL of my websites and ALL of my email (for the last approx. 5 years!) in January 2006. We were assured that they were upgrading their system and that this would NEVER happen again. Funny thing is, I had been calling them continuously just before this "unexpected crash" to tell them something was wrong with their servers since I was having constant problems trying to upload (i.e. constant server error messages). Having been with them for so long (and trusting in their assurance that it would not happen again), I decided to give them another chance.

Well, about a month ago it DID happen again. All sites lost. All email lost. AGAIN. No apology, no satisfactory explanation, nothing. I told them they could either reverse my charges on my credit card in full or I would charge it back though the credit card company directly (which all of you are within your rights to do if you don't receive a service you paid for). They credited me back to full amount of my 6-month service package I had purchased a few weeks earlier.

Some people say they are reasonably priced - but what are you getting? Even pennies is too much to pay for "service" that is non-existent and results in the continual destruction of your sites and/or email.

Stay far, far away from DotCanada.

Verdict : I joined dotCanada.com through Costco Executive Membership in early 2005. I was pleased with the service that was provided initially. I subsequently transferred an additional domain to dotCanada to act as an alias for the first domain. After some minor problems in setting up the alias domain, dotCanada support came through timely. For more than a year, things went smoothly. Then, in late June 2006, I lost E-mail for about a week. Web pages required passwords where none were required. It appears that dot Canada had some major problems. When service was restored, dotCanada had eliminated the web page password protection on some of my pages. DotCanada suggested that I "upgrade" to their HELM server from the PLESK server. After spending several hours of my time to convert my site and E-mail accounts to Helm, dotCanada sucessfully changed the DNS for both domain names to HELM. But, it didn't last. A couple of weeks later, all clients were told to upgrade to OS4. I could not keep HELM. DotCanada's upgrade to OS4 was a disaster for me. My commercial E-mail messages were lost because dotCanada did not properly transfer the second (alias) pointer domain name. I immediately contacted technical support. For more than a week I have been in contact with them to fix the problem of the second commercial domain not pointing to the primary domain. Without correcting the problem, they closed and discontinued my outstanding support ticket, and "upgraded" my account to the Costco Enterprise Support! At the "upgraded" service, I had to explain my problem all over again as the new support group had no access to the previous support ticket. DotCanada does not provide timely support, and in my case, demonstrated lack of sensitivity and timely resolution to customer problems. After more than 9 days, my commercial E-mail traffice is still not operating.

Verdict : If you have ever heard the saying you get what you pay for it applies fully to this host.

They have constant issues with their servers and can never restore their backups. They always have an excuse about the backup tapes being corrupt and restore some ancient backup. Frankly I do not believe they do backups regularly.

What upset me the most was that they tried to cover up the down-time/severity.

We got sick of our web site always being down and not being able to use our Email and abandoned them.

All that being said if you are on a super-strict budget they offer a lot for ver little.

Verdict : This was our first site and our first web hosting experience. Unfortunately, we have nothing good to say about this hosting company. They are not very helpful, and they are not available much of the time. We opened our business doors in June, and at the end of June/beginning of July, our site went down. Dotcanada posted that they were having technical difficulties and that it should be fixed ASAP. Well, it came back up for 1-2 hours, and then went down AGAIN, and this time, our site (AND our emails) were down for FIVE DAYS!!! Customers were lost due to this, and all Dotcanada could say was that they would be bringing sites up one by one!!! Anyhow, needless to say, we are in the process of TRANSFERRING our site to another web hosting company... we've learned our lesson and have been researching the best web hosting sites (for service, reliability, best bang for our buck, etc). So, for anyone thinking of using Dotcanada for a hosting company, THINK AGAIN!!! or risk losing customers!

Verdict : I moved our agency from to dotCanada in October of 2004. It seemed to present a price and set of features that was useful to our needs (of about 50 staff at the time).

But, when we had the rare problem, they never came through. It has always been a matter of days for a reply, and the responses are useless - i.e.: they tell you nothing you didn't already know.

The final straw was a mess dotCanada created themselves in Feb 2006. They moved our site data from a server called Tupper to one called Bennett. In doing so, they lost ALL our staff email, and all our web site stats data. Gone. Not only did they completely lack in response to this major issue (how would your business hold up if you lost all your Email?), they never apologized. They never took responsability for this disgusting failure and screw up.

In fact, I had to theaten them that I was going to file complaints with provincial and federal business authorities before they actually tried to do anything. But ultimately, the data was lost. They never offered anything in repair for the situation. They just didn't care.

Avoid them. They will leave you in the dark.

Verdict : The only good thing about dotCanada would be support. Whenever I had trouble they at least tried to fix them in minutes since I submitted the ticket. They only get 4/5 because they don't actually always fix the problems: sometimes they try to make the website run for just a couple of minutes, then the errors show up again.
The worst thing about dotCanada is downtimes. My website is down at least every other day, and I can be 100% sure I haven't noticed all the downtimes. Transfer is ok, and the offer might sound attractive at first, but the prices are too high for all the downtime you get.

Verdict : Dotcanada recently bought the name and unwanted customers of affordablehost. Before the sale, affordablehost was a terrific host, but now it's amazingly bad. Sites go down for days, sometimes weeks, at a time. Calls and e-mails to every department of the company go unanswered and issues never seem to get resolved. At times, it feels like the place is really just an empty building. This company is a disaster.
